Not All Labels Are BS5609 Certified — Here’s Why It Matters

For manufacturers shipping hazardous chemicals, industrial products, or hardware overseas, label durability is more than a branding opportunity or informational need — it’s a matter of legal compliance and human safety.

What Is BS5609 Certification?

BS5609 is the internationally recognized British Standard for pressure-sensitive adhesive labels used in marine transport. Known as the Marine Immersion Label Testing Standard, BS5609 ensures that labels on containers and drums of dangerous materials remain legible and securely adhered even — after months of exposure to harsh ocean environments. To achieve certification, labels are subjected to extensive testing, including:

  • Seawater immersion for up to three months
  • Abrasion testing with sand and salt exposure
  • Adhesion testing on various container materials

Labels that don’t meet BS5609 standards can fail when exposed to seawater, abrasion, or extended sunlight — putting compliance, product identification, and ultimately worker safety at risk. The concept is this: If a label can survive at sea, it can survive almost anywhere.

Why It Matters for GHS Compliance

For chemical manufacturers, BS5609 certification directly supports GHS (Globally Harmonized System) compliance by ensuring critical safety information remains visible and intact. Key label elements include:

  • Red and black GHS pictograms
  • Hazard and precautionary statements
  • Health warnings and product identifiers

If these elements fade, peel, or wash away, a shipment could be deemed noncompliant under IMO (International Maritime Organization) and UN transport regulations.

Printing BS5609 Labels In-House

While achieving BS5609 certification is a high standard, with the correct equipment, ensuring compliance does not require outsourcing. With BS5609-certified printers, inks, and label media, manufacturers can create compliant labels in-house while both improving responsiveness and reducing costs.

AstroNova’s new QuickLabel® QL-425 (A4 width) and QL-435 (A3 width) compact digital inkjet presses, when paired with GetLabels® BS5609-certified label stock and pigment inks, deliver one of the industry’s most durable and BS5609-compliant labeling solutions. Together, these systems allow companies to:

  • Print GHS-compliant, seawater-durable labels on demand
  • Produce short and medium label runs without minimum order restrictions
  • Maintain brand consistency and compliance across labeling from the same platform

Compliance and Beyond: A Smarter Labeling Solution

And regulatory-compliant labeling is just the beginning. The QL-425 and QL-435 also deliver the print quality, versatility, and ease of use manufacturers require for other efficient, flexible product container labeling operations.

  • Dual ink options: dye for vibrant color or pigment for durability
  • Energy-efficient operation
  • Compact design for crowded production spaces
  • Built-in monitoring and predictive maintenance
  • End-to-end workflow control with InEdit RIP software

In other words, the same QL-425/QL-435 system a manufacturer uses to produce durable BS5609-compliant hazard labels in-house can also print full-color branding or primary display labels for bottles, cartons, and drums in their own workspace. The result: streamlined production processing with fewer pieces of equipment and reduced processing steps, ensured regulatory compliance, and a consistent, professional appearance across the product line.

The bottom line is that in-house BS5609-compliant label printing helps manufacturers stay compliant, efficient, and in control of their entire labeling process.
